Local Area Information

Porthleven is located about three miles from Helston in the south of Cornwall. It is the most southerly harbour in England and famous for its stormy seas that are often photographed. It is a thriving village, fast becoming a foodie destination, with plenty of things to do all year round.  Porthleven boasts a number of great restaurants; cafes; takeaways; pubs (including the unbeatable Ship Inn for a great pint of Doom Bar) gift shops, galleries and a supermarket.

There is a beach with lifeguard presence during the summer months and some fantastic walks along the coast towards Loe Bar or Rinsey Head.

The beach has a dog friendly area on its eastern side with dogs allowed all year round and a seasonal dog ban on the area of beach to the west. The dog ban applies from 1st May until the 30th September from 9am to 7pm. Outside these hours and from October 1st to Easter the west part of the beach is dog friendly.

Nearby Loe Pool is the largest natural freshwater lake in Cornwall and well worth a visit. There are some good walks around the lake which joins up to the coast and the National Trust's Penrose estate.

Marazion and St Michael's Mount are a short drive away as are Lizard Point. The Eden Project is around an hour's drive. Popular St Ives is a half hour drive. Of course Cornwall is Poldark country and there are a number of places of interest nearby for fans including Kynance Cove.

For any runners there is a popular Parkrun at Penrose every Saturday at 9.00 am.

Surfers - Porthleven is popular with surfers though having seen the size of the waves it is for those with experience only!  There are a number of Surf Schools locally. Look out for the Dan Joel Surf School in nearby Helston.

Vertical Blue Adventures are based in Porthleven and offer water sports; equipment hire; kayaking and canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding.

Porthleven Food Festival usually runs over a weekend in April.  The festival has been running for 10 years now and is an extremely popular event with food stalls; music and cooking demonstrations.
